The Challenge

Consoul is a combination social, media, and educational app aimed at supporting caregivers responsible for elderly or disabled family members. As a new startup, Consoul brought in our team of designers to develop a thorough style book that could be easily iterated and adapted as the app grows and includes more features. My team also created hi-fidelity prototypes of the five main pages to establish the app’s structure and main services.

My Role

• Team Lead and Point of Contact

• Research analysis and synthesis

• Create user personas and journeys

• Sketches, wireframes, hi-fi prototypes

• Style Book

Research and Planning

My team and I began by reviewing Consoul’s past user research. We established a four-week timeline to produce a style book and mockups of the web-app’s five main screens: login, home, learn, shop, and chat.

To complete our work within the tight deadline, my team worked together to create each week’s deliverables and finished a day before the actual delivery to give ourselves ample time to discuss, iterate, and improve our designs.

Findings:

• Carers main practical concerns were financial security, quality of life, and medical management

• Carers struggled emotionally to ask friends and family for help

• Carers felt isolated from a lack of community with shared experience

Synthesis and Sketching

Our first two weeks focused on synthesizing Consoul’s prior research and sketching out our designs. I looked over the research to form and discuss conclusions which were then used in creating sketches. I used our group synthesis to create a persona to be the team’s central focus.

To accommodate the remote nature of our team, each team member created sketches of the five screens. We then shared our designs and discussed which elements, features, and layouts most met our client’s needs. These ideas were combined into one set of five screens.

Each page was designed with clarity and adaptability in mind. The initial feature list and project scope was pared down to ensure the developers could meet their MVP deadline. Some homepage elements were dropped, and the planned ‘care circle’ communities page became a basic inbox.

Our research found that most carers are middle-aged or older, so our interface were designed to feel familiar and accessible. Element sizing, readability, and image labelling ensure that users can easily navigate through the sight.

Our design team pulled together and organized a thorough style guide that the Consoul could use to easily add and alter pages.  The five mockups provided a basis for the developers to create the necessary flows for the product launch.

At our final meeting with Consoul, we discussed how later designs could reintroduce the cut features and be adapted as the user base grew.
